Good image for the metaphoric expression 'light at the end of the tunnel'. Old Tavannes Tunnel (Tunnel de Tavannes) in the Verdun region, a 1200m long railway tunnel constructed in 1873, served as a giant bunker, barracks, first aid post and ammunitions depot during World War I, on 4 September 1916 about 500-1000 French soldiers died due to an explosion and fire in the tunnel. This tunnel is no longer in use, a newer one constructed in 1936 next to it is still in use.
